When Barack Obama was first elected in 2008, one of the most prominent outcries on the internet was that he was a socialist and that he would turn America into a socialist country. I thought it was ridiculous, and of course, it didn’t happen. Then there was The Affordable Care Act – labeled Obamacare, that, despite getting millions of Americans health coverage, was lambasted at every turn and became the focus of conservatives to kill at their first opportunity.
So I’m a bit perplexed to hear so many Trump supporters saying “give Trump a chance”. Did they forget or do they just not know that after Obama’s election, John Boehner said, about Obama’s agenda, “We’re going to do everything – and I mean everything we can do – to kill it, stop it, slow it down, whatever we can.” And Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” 1 That doesn’t sound like they had ANY interest in giving Obama a chance.
Eight years. Two whole presidential terms. That’s a long time for name calling and bitterness from committed conservatives.

These are just 10 of the mild slurs on a long list of Obama insults compiled by a blogger on Brainshavings.com. He patrolled conservative websites to compile “The Pretty Darn Exhaustive Obama Nickname List.” Let me tell you, there are plenty more rude, crude, and of course, racist names on that list. Go ahead Trumpists, visit the site and feel a little better.
Now, I don’t condone violence, destruction of property, or personal attacks on any American peacefully protesting under their First Amendment rights. I’ve heard that some Trump supporters are having a problem with people who want to decry the recent choice of President. After Obama’s election in 2008, anti-Obama protesters lashed out at minorities and committed a wave of violent actions across the country, including the burning of predominantly African American church. Since Trump’s election, there has also been an increase of hate crimes that have including bullying immigrant children – by Trump supporters. While there have been a few spurts of violence by anti-Trump protesters (bad form people…remember “when they go low, we go high”?) the vast majority of protests have been peaceful. Trump’s tweet of Nov 10 that said “Now professional protesters, incited by the media, are protesting. Very unfair!” It seems there are conservatives on social media who have claimed that Republicans have jobs and responsibilities and couldn’t voice their discontent after the 2008 and 2012 elections. Trump supporters now want the same fairness for their candidate.
I’m sure there will be many (more) protests around the inaugural weekend of January 20. Trump supporters should remember this: anti-Trumpists aren’t protesting about his being a Republican or a white male – they are protesting against his bigotry and (IMO) his unsuitability to hold the esteemed office of President of the United States. http://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/presidential-campaign/305749-republicans-employ-double-standard-to-discredit.
It seems, after 8 years of name calling, members of the Great Obstructionist Party would realize that this is the classic example of “turnabout is fair play.”
Now it’s our turn.
And it’s our right. And I for one am taking it, because I care less about the political affiliation of the President than I do about his character.
But don’t worry, Trumpists. Given his behavior and comments since the election, and given his disregard for the office he holds, I’m sure President Trump will commit the egregious-enough act for Impeachment before we sing Auld Lang Syne again, and at least Mike Pence isn’t wearing a bullseye on his chest that says “ME ME ME” and tweeting about every little slight to his impeccable character.
